Chilton is an old village with two manors mentioned in the Doomsday book. The spelling of the name has changed several times since then.
The village of Chilton was in Berkshire until reorganisation of the County boundaries in 1974, when it was moved into Oxfordshire. Records may be found in the archives and libraries of either County, or in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. The church of All Saint's, Chilton was built during the eleventh century. It was in the Diocese of Salisbury (Sarum) from 1297 until 1836 when it was moved to the Diocese of Oxford; church records can be found in both Diocesan libraries. In the nineteenth century the rector was appointed by the patron; in 1803 this was Mr. Heneage, in 1830 it was Mr. G.B.Morland and after his death it was his widow. In 1959 the benefice of Chilton became held in plurality with that of Harwell. In 1970 both parishes were transferred from the rural deanery of Wantage to that of Wallingford.
Original Parish Registers date from 1584 for Baptisms, 1694 for Marriages, and 1667 for Burials, with some gaps, notably the burials of 1866 to 1960, which have been partially reconstructed from Bishops Transcripts, records of the parish clerk, the undertaker and the memorial inscriptions.
